Backbone Trail West – Topanga Sp
The Backbone Trail West section traverses the high ridgeline of Topanga State Park as part of the 67-mile Backbone Trail that spans the entire length of the Santa Monica Mountains from Will Rogers State Beach to Point Mugu State Park, offering one of the premier long-distance hiking experiences in Southern California. This western segment follows the crest of the mountains through open chaparral and coastal sage scrub with continuous views in both directions, north toward the San Fernando Valley and south toward the Malibu coast and the Pacific Ocean beyond. The sustained elevation along the ridgeline makes this a particularly rewarding route for wildlife watching, with red-tailed hawks, American kestrels, and Cooper hawks hunting the open hillsides throughout the day. On clear winter days after storms wash the air clean, the view extends from the San Gabriel Mountains in the northeast to the Channel Islands in the southwest, a panorama encompassing the full complexity of the Southern California geography. The strenuous rating reflects sustained climbing over multiple ridge systems rather than a single prolonged ascent, with the route repeatedly ascending and descending as it follows the sinuous spine of the range. Chaparral wildflowers bloom from December through May depending on rainfall, with ceanothus providing spectacular blue and white floral displays in late winter and early spring. The trail connects to Malibu Creek State Park at its western terminus, enabling point-to-point shuttles for backpackers exploring the full Backbone corridor.
