Eagle Rock Loop – Topanga Sp
The Eagle Rock Loop traverses the heart of Topanga State Park, the largest urban wilderness park in the United States at 11,000 acres, rising above the Los Angeles basin through chaparral and oak woodland to the massive sandstone formation known as Eagle Rock that serves as the symbolic centerpiece of this remarkable urban wildland. This strenuous circuit gains 2,000 feet through a landscape that feels far removed from the surrounding metropolis yet sits just 30 minutes from downtown Los Angeles, offering a genuine backcountry experience within the second-largest city in America. Eagle Rock itself is a dramatically eroded sandstone outcropping that juts from a ridgeline commanding views of the Santa Monica Mountains, the Malibu coast, and on exceptionally clear days, Catalina Island floating on the Pacific horizon. The trail system connects multiple canyons and ridgelines through diverse habitat types including coastal sage scrub, chaparral, valley oak woodland, and riparian corridors along seasonal streams. Mountain lions are resident in the park, and their sign is regularly found on trail cameras throughout the wilderness core. Western scrub jays, California towhees, and wrentits are ubiquitous along the trail, and American kestrels hunt the open ridgeline areas. Spring wildflower season from February through April brings spectacular displays of golden poppies, owl clover, and blue dicks across the open hillsides. The park entry at Trippet Ranch provides parking, restrooms, and picnic facilities at the main trailhead.
