The Santa Ynez Canyon Falls Trail follows a seasonal creek through one of the most beautiful hidden canyons in the Santa Monica Mountains, climbing through riparian woodland to a 25-foot waterfall that flows dramatically after winter rains and trickles through summer before drying in the driest years. The canyon is tucked into the hills above Pacific Palisades and feels genuinely wild and remote despite its proximity to one of the wealthiest communities in Los Angeles. The trail crosses the creek numerous times on stepping stones and informal log bridges, passing through dense groves of coast live oak, western sycamore, and red willow that provide shade and wildlife habitat throughout the route. Canyon wrens call from the rocky walls above the waterfall, and scrub jays compete noisily with acorn woodpeckers in the oak canopy above the trail. The waterfall basin is framed by mossy sandstone walls that drip with maidenhair ferns and five-finger ferns during wet seasons, creating a lush grotto atmosphere that provides welcome coolness on warm spring days. The moderate rating reflects the numerous creek crossings that can be slippery when wet and require careful footing. Poison oak is abundant along the lower creek section and requires attention when passing through narrow brushy sections. The trail is busiest on winter and early spring weekends after rain events that maximize waterfall flow, and visiting on weekday mornings provides a quieter experience of this special urban canyon environment.
