Fern Canyon Trail – Van Damme Sp
The Fern Canyon Trail at Van Damme State Park descends into a lush coastal canyon where five-finger ferns and sword ferns blanket every surface in an unbroken wall of green, creating one of the most enchanting forest environments on the Mendocino coast. The canyon walls drip with moisture from coastal fog that rolls inland from the Pacific, sustaining a temperate rainforest ecosystem of remarkable density and beauty. The trail follows the gentle course of the Little River upstream through a canopy of red alders, big-leaf maples, and towering coast redwoods whose root systems grip the canyon walls above the streambed. In spring, trillium, sorrel, and wild ginger carpet the forest floor beneath the fern overstory, while winter rains transform the canyon into a series of rushing cascades and mirror-still pools. The loop continues upward out of the canyon to connect with the pygmy forest ecosystem, offering a striking contrast between the lush canyon and the open, stunted forest above. The trail is well-maintained with boardwalk sections protecting sensitive areas, and the gentle grade makes it suitable for families with young children. Roosevelt elk occasionally venture into the canyon from the surrounding coastal prairie. The park sits two miles south of Mendocino village, making it an ideal addition to any visit to the Mendocino headlands.
