Best seasons: July through September for clear summits; ancient bristlecone pine forest en route. Wheeler Peak at 13,063 feet is Nevada's second-highest summit. The approach passes the only permanent glacier in the Great Basin and a 4,900-year-old bristlecone pine forest.
Pack plenty of water — desert and high-altitude trails demand more hydration than you expect. Layers are essential above 10,000 feet.
